What nutrients do vegetables need to grow big? NPK wise?

The actual vegetable itself. The cucumber on the vine. What will make this cucumber grow strong and fast? Vegetables are so much heartier than the leaves of a plant. That makes me think that nitrogen would be needed to make those cucumbers nice and big. Anyone know anything about this?
